Definitions of key terms in our Graphite Market Research

Written by Bhavya Moudgil

1. Natural Graphite- Naturally occurring crystalline carbon material mined from flake, amorphous or vein deposits and used in batteries, refractories, electrodes and other industrial applications.

2. Synthetic Graphite- Man-made graphite produced from carbon-rich raw materials such as needle coke or petroleum coke, primarily used in lithium-ion battery anodes and graphite electrodes.

3. Spherical Graphite- Processed and purified natural graphite shaped into spherical particles for use in lithium-ion battery anode materials.

4. Anode Active Material (AAM)- Processed graphite material used in lithium-ion batteries to store and release electrical energy during charging and discharging cycles.

5. Flake Graphite- A form of natural graphite characterised by its layered crystal structure and varying flake sizes, commonly used in battery materials, refractories and expandable graphite applications.

6. Graphite Electrodes- High-purity graphite components used in electric arc furnaces for steel production due to their high thermal and electrical conductivity.

7. Needle Coke- A premium carbon raw material used in the production of synthetic graphite anodes and graphite electrodes.

8. Market Balance- The difference between total supply and total demand in a given period, indicating whether the market is in surplus or deficit.

9. Supply Outlook- Forecast of future graphite production by region, product type or asset based on project pipelines, capacity expansions and operating trends.

10. Demand Outlook- Forecast of graphite consumption across key end-use sectors such as batteries, steel, refractories and industrial applications.

11. Energy Transition Demand- Graphite demand driven by the growth of electric vehicles, battery energy storage systems and renewable energy technologies.

12. Ex-China Supply- Graphite production originating outside China, increasingly important for supply chain diversification and policy-driven localisation strategies.

13. Battery-grade Graphite- Graphite material that meets purity, particle size and performance specifications required for lithium-ion battery applications.
