A type well is a hypothetical, representative well derived from a group of similar wells. These wells are typically grouped by factors such as location, operator, completion design, or development method, and the type well is used to generate a typical production profile.

In the North America Company and Play Analysis Tool (NACPAT), type wells are used for performance benchmarking. For example, when analysing the IP30 (mmboed) for a type well in the Permian, the metric represents a production profile that is representative of the sub-play, rather than a simple average of all wells.

This approach allows users to compare sub-play performance consistently based on how actual wells perform relative to the type well benchmark.
