Data quality and characteristics

  • Q: What is the pool of examples that Analogues searches?

    • All oil and gas fields in our Lens Subsurface database. This currently includes over 35,000 fields. If any filters are applied to the data, Analogues will only search within the filtered data. Currently North American Unconventional fields are excluded but will be included in future update.

  • Q: How often is the dataset updated?

    • The Analogues tool uses Woodmac’s Lens data that is updated weekly. All assumptions on commercial factors, production and reserves can be found in Lens Subsurface.

  • Q: Are the analogue outputs prospects, fields, plays or basins?

    • All outputs are fields. Future updates will include prospects and individual reservoirs.

  • Q: Is the data changed in any way between Lens and the Analogue feature?

    • Yes – the dataset is enhanced for optimal ML performance including attribute optimisation and tailored imputation methods for each attribute (using geographical clustering and related attribute combinations).

Analogues functionality

  • Q: What type of ML is this?

    • The model is built on a clustering algorithm, which is a type of non-supervised machine learning.

    • Our specific algorithm allows us to use both numerical and text data and most importantly allows us to weight attributes depending on the user interests.

    • The data ML optimisation process also includes other ML processes (internally run).

  • Q: What parameters are included in the workflow?

    • The current version (September 2025) includes rock properties, hydrocarbon properties and commercial factors. For a full list, please see the Analogues asset properties table prior to clicking the Calculate Analogues icon.

  • Q: What parameters are not included in the workflow?

    • Several, many of which will be included in near-future updates. These include but are not limited to gross depositional environment, reservoir pressure, reservoir temperature, field operator company.

  • Q: Can I export the data for use in external products?

    • Yes. The results and associated data can be exported from the Analogues results table, or a broader dataset can be exported from Lens Subsurface Asset Analysis.

  • Q: Is the information in the model and the model functionality shared?

    • No. This is Woodmac IP.

  • Q: Do clients have to use/subscribe to this?

    • No. Clients can choose whether to take Lens Subsurface Modelling. Users of Lens Subsurface Modelling can choose whether to use Analogues or other screening/filtering workflows.

Data security and AI

  • Q: Is this an externally sourced/run algorithm?

    • No – everything is run inside a closed system with a WoodMac defined setup.

  • Q: Does the Analogues tool use Woodmac client data?

    • No. Analogues only uses data from the Woodmac internal database with no live links to external data sources/AI tools.

  • Q: Does the Analogues tool use client user input/query data as part of the AI-driven model?

    • No - Future enhancements will allow users to add their own inputs, but these will not be stored by WoodMac or used to influence the model outside of your own workflow.

  • Q: Is this generative AI?

    • No

  • Q: Is this an LLM

    • No

Future developments

  • Q: What additional parameters will be added to the model?

    • Gross depositional environment, pressure, temperature.

  • Q: What additional functionality will be added to the product?

    • Ability to change the input field attributes, ability include/exclude attributes, ability to edit individual attribute weightings, option to save preferences and weighting selections, ability to change number of outputs.
